I started my Avon business in 2002. Newly married and living in Los Banos, California., my husband Tim and I were commuting 50+ miles to our jobs. After a vacation to Hawaii in 2004, we asked ourselves what we had always wanted to do but never got the chance. The answer: go back to college. We searched the Internet for universities, sold everything that wouldn’t fit into a 40-ft. container and headed to Hawaii. When I got to Hawaii, I had a difficult time finding work. I wondered, “What if I treat my Avon hobby like a business?” My husband and I decided to give it a try. A week later, my Upline, Vondell McKenzie, called to ask if I wanted to become the best Avon Representative in the state of Hawaii, I answered, “Yes, I am ready!” That’s when everything changed! Vondell mentored me by phone from California for an entire year. With everything she taught me, I duplicated into my Team. The key to my success has been building relationships. Today, I have a Downline of over 350. I call them my Nova Superstars and we are a family, sharing the ups and downs of business and supporting each other in the mutual goal of becoming the best we can be. By becoming a mentor myself, I have learned that my Leadership business is not about me. It’s about the people I meet and about sharing my values, my skills and my knowledge. How powerful is that?
I often use a technique called reflection when I meet new people. I listen and watch their body language and then I reflect what they do. If a person is gregarious, I am too. If they are quiet, so am I. This technique puts people in their comfort zone. Want to jump-start your business? Have a party. I love party plan selling. It’s really the most efficient use of your selling time…and it’s fun
